I. GOD GAVE US THIS COMMANDMENT TO PREPARE US FOR

   LIFE?

1. God understands that parents are not Perfect.

     Romans 3:23

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

2. Respect for authority begins at home.

    Exodus 20:12

Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life

in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

3. How I relate to my parents is the basis for relating to others in life.

     Colossians 3:20

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the

     Lord.

II. HOW AM I TO HONOR MY PARENTS?

1. As a child, I am to honor my parents by obeying and respecting

    them.

    Ephesians 6:1

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right

2. As a young person, I honor my parents by accepting and

    appreciating them.  Acceptance means:

Realize that God used them to bring you into this world.

Listen to what they have to say. Proverbs 23:22

Acceptance includes forgiveness. Proverbs 20:20; Deut. 26:11

3. As an adult, I honor my parents by affirming and not abandoning

    them.

    Proverbs 3:27

When it is in your power, don’t withhold good from the one to whom

    it is due

    I Timothy 5:8

Now if anyone does not provide for his own relatives, and

especially for his household, he has denied the faith and is worse

    than an unbeliever.

    I Timothy 5:4

But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they should learn to

practice their religion toward their own family first and to repay their

    parents, for this pleases God.
