Focus On “YOUR” Family: “Honor Your Parents” Exodus 20:12 I. GOD GAVE US THIS COMMANDMENT TO PREPARE US FOR LIFE? 1. God understands that parents are not Perfect. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 2. Respect for authority begins at home. Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 3. How I relate to my parents is the basis for relating to others in life. Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the Lord. II. HOW AM I TO HONOR MY PARENTS? 1. As a child, I am to honor my parents by obeying and respecting them. Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right 2. As a young person, I honor my parents by accepting and appreciating them. Acceptance means: Realize that God used them to bring you into this world. Listen to what they have to say. Proverbs 23:22 Acceptance includes forgiveness. Proverbs 20:20; Deut. 26:11 3. As an adult, I honor my parents by affirming and not abandoning them. Proverbs 3:27 When it is in your power, don’t withhold good from the one to whom it is due I Timothy 5:8 Now if anyone does not provide for his own relatives, and especially for his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. I Timothy 5:4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they should learn to practice their religion toward their own family first and to repay their parents, for this pleases God.
