Focus On “YOUR” Family: “Celebrate Life” Exodus 20:13

 

I. WHAT THIS COMMAND DOES NOT MEAN!

 

1. It is not prohibiting KILLING ANIMALS.

Genesis 9:3 Every living creature will be food for you; as [I gave]

the green plants, I have given you everything

 

2. It is not prohibiting CAPITAL PUNISHMENT.

Leviticus 24:17; Romans 13:4

“If a man kills anyone, he must be put to death.

“The principle is a life for a life."

 

3. It is not prohibiting going to WAR.

Ecclesiastes 3:8

a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.

 

II. HOW THIS COMMAND APPLIES TO THE FAMILY

We need to understand the Hebrew word for Murder as used in Exodus 20:13 .The word for Kill in the Hebrew is rahaz. It means violent, personal killing.

 

1. God says NO to SUICIDE.

Job 14:5

Since man’s days are determined and the number of his months depends on You, and You have set limits he cannot pass

 

2. God says NO to MERCY KILLING.

Job 12:10

The life of every living thing is in His hand, as well as the breath of all mankind

 

3. God says NO to ABORTION.

Psalm 139:13, 16

For it was You who created my inward parts;[3] Lit my kidneys You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

 

Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all [my] days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began.
