The Weight of the World

Matthew 26:36-39

In all that Jesus experienced during the last week on earth the weight of the world increased with great intensity on Thursday evening.

After the Last Supper with the disciples, they left and went to Gethsemane.

I. Jesus prepared for the next hours through PRAYER.

Matthew 26:36

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He told the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.

Gethsemane means OIL PRESS

II. The tremendous weight that Jesus felt brought SORROW

     and DISTRESS.

Matthew 26:37-38

Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow—to the point of death.

The agony that Jesus felt was so great that he began to sweat drops of blood.

LUKE 22:43-44

Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.

Being in anguish, He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground

III. The weight of the cup did not keep Jesus from being

     obedient to His Heavenly Father.

Matthew 26:39

Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”
